Free condom warning for students

Students have been urged not to use free condoms handed out at a Cambridge University freshers' fair over safety fears.

The Cambridge University Student Union (CUSU) said the contraceptives did not have a BSI Kitemark - a symbol showing the product has been independently tested.

But the Cambridge Union Society (CUS), which distributed 1,000 of the condoms, emblazoned with the words "For a more perfect Union", accused the CUSU of issuing "misinformation".

It said the condoms were safe as they carried a CE mark, showing they met European and British requirements.

"I would like to personally apologise to all members for any distress caused by CUSU's misinformation," said Adam Bott, president of the CUS - the university's debating club.

"At the union, we have no higher priority than our members' continued enjoyment of a safe and satisfying sex life."

The CUSU sent an e-mail to students offering free replacements.

It said only condoms with a Kitemark should be used.

Andrea Walko, student union welfare officer, said: "We don't want to risk anything when it comes to sexual health.

"We definitely think it's important that condoms have a Kitemark and the university completely supports us on this."
