The chancellor promises to help 300,000 British savers get their money back from the internet arm of bust Icelandic bank Landsbanki. Bridgid Nzekwu reports.

Alistair Darling promised he would "stand behind" any depositor, including those with over £50,000 in savings not currently covered by the existing deposit guarantee.

And the prime minister, Gordon Brown, revealed that the government would pursue Iceland in the courts to reclaim the money.

In a separate move, the savings bank ING Direct UK today announced it was acquiring more than £3bn of deposits held by British savers with other Icelandic-owned banks.
