Sam Sparro
Interview

"Ooh famous people!"

Australia's Sam Sparro is currently riding high in the charts with his electro-soul debut single 'Black and Gold'. But who is he? And what does he want? And why did he once pretended he had a tattoo of a dice on his arse?

We spoke to him and found out.

Music is his family trade
"My father and grandfather are both musicians so when I was about ten my family moved from Australia to LA because my Dad, who's a gospel recording artist, found a deal in the States. At the time I was really excited like 'ooh famous people!' but then when I actually got there it was really hard to adjust and I was kind of a loner and a weirdo because it's a rough age and kids start to get a bit mean - if they're not already. I started to kind of fail a little in my classes but I thought I was smarter than everyone else anyway. So I went back to Sydney to live with my grandparents."

He's learning to be a popstar
I'm not a popstar yet or anything, but I have this weird thing in my head that I have to have new clothes because I can't wear the same thing twice. It's terrible. They were laying into Adele the other day because she wore the same jumper twice at the Brits and the next day. It's like, come on there are starving hungry naked people all over the world, and she's worn this jumper twice!

He would like to sing a song with Adele
She's such a sweet, normal, funny girl. I ran into her at a restaurant and it was the week her record was at number one and I was like 'Oh my God, it's Adele!' And my agent said 'go and talk to her' and she knew who I was and was a fan and was like, in this cockney voice, 'Oh lovely to meet you darling!' It would be fun to sing with her at one point. I could try to talk her into something. We could duet to '(I've Had) The Time of My Life' and learn the moves.

He used to tell peculiar lies about his bottom
I don't have any tattoos but when I was in high school I used to lie and say I had a dice tattooed on my arse. I didn't think far ahead enough to think of the number it landed on and no one asked but everyone was like 'yeah whatever, you're just trying to be cool' and asked me to show them and I said 'God I'm not going to show you my bum. Give me some privacy!' I have no idea why I said dice come to think of it.

We've all done it (we really haven't). Thank you Sam.
